Great Scott! LC dominates in opening round of sectionals

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs dominated the entire 80 minutes with a 13-0 win Monday evening against the West Union Lady Dragons at Lynchburg-Clay High School in the opening round of the 2010 SE Division II Sectional Tournament.
"All I can say is it was a game," LC coach Dennis West said. "We got some good practice in and now we move on, and we are happy to move on. Everyone got to play."
Taylor Scott made the game hers with six goals, getting a hat-trick in each half.
Scott, a sophomore, scored goals in the first half at 31:48, 13:11 and 7:35 with an assist from Meredith Fittro on her second goal. LC junior Karen Hilt assisted Scott on her third goal.
Besides the three goals by Scott in the first half, there were six more added to the scoreboard in the dominating effort by the Lady Mustangs in the first 40 minutes of play.
Freshman Sarah Spidel scored first for the Lady Mustangs at the 36:06 mark of the first half with a goal that was assisted by senior Katie Mahoney.
Less than five minutes later Scott scored her goal as she made numerous moves with the ball, kicking it past the West Union keeper for a point.
Brandi Hunter, a sophomore, gave LC a three-goal advantage, off a rebound, with 19:48 left in the half.
At the 14:01 mark, Hilt sent the ball into the back of the net for a Lady Mustang 4-0 lead.
Scott then made the score 5-0, followed with a goal up the middle by Fittro with 12:58 left in the half for a six-goal advantage.
LC (11-5-1) continued to add to their score with great offensive pressure as Hilt scored for the second time in the half, this time at the 11:02 mark, with the ball ricocheting off the keeper into the back of the net.
Scott's third goal gave LC an eight-goal lead, with the assist from Hilt. The final goal of the first 40 minutes went to Fittro with 1:07 left in the half. She was assisted by Hilt.
In the first half, LC out-shot West Union 26-3.
The Lady Mustangs weren't finished showing why they gained a second-place finish in the Southern Hills League, as they scored four more goals in the second half.
Scott scored the first three goals of the second half to put LC up 12-0. Her second goal of the half was assisted by Hilt.
The 13th and final goal of the game came with 13:25 remaining on the running clock of the second half by Spidel. Spidel was assisted by Fittro.
LC finished the game with 43 shots.
Sophomore keeper Emma Setty, who was in for injured senior keeper Shelbi Halverson, had four saves.
The Lady Mustangs now stand at 11-5-1 overall and 6-1 in the SHL.
LC will play again on Thursday at 5 p.m. when they will host the winner of Peebles and Chesapeake.
