Hillsboro High School graduate Dustin Carter will receive the Medal of Courage Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, according to Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink.

Zink informed the Hillsboro City Council Monday evening that, "I have been notified that a local Hillsboro High School graduate has been accepted his nomination into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla. I was contacted by a representative from the Hall asking a proclamation and special recognition be held in Hillsboro before the official presentation that is to be held in Columbus, Ohio on Sept. 12."

Zink said that the city has coordinated with Rick Earley, superintendent of Hillsboro City Schools, regarding the event.

"Present plans are to hold a Dustin Carter Day at the Hillsboro High School on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. At that time, we will present Dustin with a proclamation honoring him with receiving the Medal of Courage Award which will be officially presented to him on the 12th."

Zink said he would like to encourage all Hillsboro residents to attend the event.

"For those of you who aren't familiar with Dustin Carter, he's a young man who didn't have any arms or legs and took up wrestling as a hobby, I guess, in high school, and ended up going to the state tournament his senior year."

Carter's story has been publicized nationally, in such outlets as The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and CBS news.
