Bearcats want 2nd straight win

BAINBRIDGE – The Paint Valley Bearcats are headed into Week 9 coming off their first win of the season. They try for their second win of the year against Scioto Valley Conference rival Unioto this Friday at George Knisley Field in Bainbridge.
In a strange turn of events, the Bearcats scored their game-winning touchdown with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter last week against the Huntington Huntsmen, when Brenan Dove pounded his way into the end zone for six points.
This season, the Bearcats have scored 99 points. The defense has allowed 227 points, as they are still looking for their first home win of the season.
Friday night is their final opportunity.
For the Shermans, they have allowed 216 points on defense, and scored 169 points. This season they have defeated Vinton County, Alexander and Huntington.
UHS is led by senior quarterback Brick Davis (6-3, 175).
"Their quarterback stands out," PV head coach Pete Hollon said. "He does a good job running the spread offense, and he runs well, too. They do well on offense by gearing plays around his feet."
The Shermans also have junior running back Jarrod Cyrus (5-9, 240).
"Jarrod is productive when they run the Pro-I," Hollon said. "He is a multi-dimensional runner."
Defensively, UHS averages 6-2, 260, which will be a factor for the Bearcats to overcome for the chance to gain their second win of the year.
"With Garett (Tyree) healthy, we've been able to gain an offensive idenity, and that just shows he's one of the best athletes in our conference. This will be a battle of field position, and with Garett's ability to punt the ball ... if there is a better punter in southern Ohio, I'd like to see it."
This is the first game the Bearcats have entered following a win, and Hollon said his team will play with a different attitude.
"I guarantee our kids will have a different step this week," he said. "I thought we played Piketon well a few weeks ago, and we bounced back after a couple players were hurt.
"Nolan (Taylor) and Nate (Yoakum) are out for the rest of the year, and (Riley) Markko is banged up, so it's tough to replace them in the lineup, but we'll have to do that to be successful."
