Bates, Lady Lions control Dragons

LEESBURG — In the night cap Tuesday night at Fairfield High School, the Lady Lions of Fairfield returned to the field, after a week off, and gained their second win of the season with a two-goal performance, to defeat the West Union Lady Dragons, 2-0.
Both goals, one in each half, came via senior Kylie Bates, who, along with the rest of her teammates, kept the ball in West Union territory for most of the 80-minute contest.
At times, though, the Lady Lions had opportunities to add to their lead, but just like in the boys contest held earlier in the day, shots at the goal went every way, except into the net.
"It was tough to get back after the fair," Fairfield coach Russ Boone said following the game. "We did get a practice in, but we have three games this week and a big match (Wednesday) against Peebles. We are so young right now, we just have to continue to keep working hard when we are on the field."
Bates controlled the front of the goal by continually putting pressure on the Lady Dragons' defense until the first goal was scored with 3:34 left in the first half for a 1-0 Lady Lion lead.
With that being the lone goal scored in the first half, FHS and Bates added to the lead in the early stages of the final 40 minute half with her second goal with 33:56 remaining, off a hard kick past the keeper of West Union. Bates beat the defense of West Union to gain the perfect opportunity to get the shot at goal, who like their boys team played without the luxury of substitutes.
"Our seniors did a great jobs up front," Boone said. "Along with Kylie, Dora Grooms and Lindsey Tolle controlled the front. We just couldn't get the ball to fall into the back of the net."
Boone also spoke about the play of the Lady Lions' midfield against the Lady Dragons during the non-league match.
"Kylie, Heather Huff and Danielle Butler all did such a great job," Boone said. "Another player, Mary Stout, played a big role for us (Tuesday).
"Mary played a new position in this game. We switched her to right forward and she did a wonderful job. She was playing midfield earlier this year."
As mentioned before, the Lady Lions (2-2) had unrelenting pressure against the West Union Lady Dragons in both halves, and Boone credited that to the way the Fairfield midfield played in their return to the regular season play after a week long break.
"Our fullbacks kept the ball on their side and that got everything started," he said.
The Lady Lions stand at 2-2 overall and will face the Peebles Lady Indians Wednesday at 6 p.m. at FHS in a Southern Hills League game.
