Whiteoak Wildcats move on to district semifinals

In a win-and-advance part of the season, the Whiteoak Wildcats did just that on Thursday evening, winning their Division VII SE District Quarterfinal game against the Ironton St. Joseph Central Flyers by a 60-46 score at SJHS.
Whiteoak (9-13) had double the score of St. Joseph after the first quarter came to a close, leading 18-9 after eight minutes. In setting the tone for the game, WHS had nine points from Zander Roades in the first quarter with three two-point baskets and a 3-pointer.
Also in the first for WHS, Sawyer Blair scored seven points off a 3-pointer and two two-point field goals. Brady Brandenburg scored two points in the opening frame.
No. 8 seeded St. Joseph (12-10) outscored WHS 21-14 in the second for a score of 32-30 at halftime with Whiteoak in front.
For the Wildcats in the second, Roades made two more 3-pointers, while Blair and Brandenburg each made two two-point buckets in the quarter for four points each.
Whiteoak outscored the Flyers by 11 points in the third quarter at 18-7 where WHS had eight points in the frame from Zach Igo off two 3-pointers and a two-point basket.
The third frame also had two points scored by Roades, four points off two baskets by Blair, and two points each by Jackson Tedford and Brandenburg.
In the fourth frame, Whiteoak led the quarter at 10-9 where Roades had two points with a basket, and Brandenburg scored eight points with three baskets and two made free throws.
As a team the Wildcats totaled 20 two-point baskets, six 3-pointers and they went 2-of-3 from the free-throw line.
St. Joseph finished the game with 18 two-point baskets, one 3-pointer, and they were 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Leading the Flyers in scoring were Wesley Noel with 16 points and Carson Willis with 10 points.
Next for the No. 9 seeded Whiteoak team is a Division VII SE District Semifinal game against the No. 1 seeded South Webster Jeeps (18-3) on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Waverly High School (not the Downtown Gym) at 6 p.m.
