Whiteoak finishes regular season with SHAC victory over Manchester

The Whiteoak Wildcats played their final regular-season game Friday night (Feb. 20) and defended their home court with a 57-51 win over the visiting Manchester Greyhounds at Whiteoak High School.
The Wildcats gained an eight-point lead at the conclusion of the first quarter with a 19-11 lead but were outscored 13-11 in the second frame by the Greyhounds, leaving the score at 30-24 with the Wildcats in front.
Manchester won the third frame at 19-11, but the fourth quarter belonged to the Wildcats at 16-8 for a six-point win.
WHS had three players score in double figures with Brady Brandenburg leading the way with 15 points by making one 3-pointer, four two-point buckets, and he was 4-of-5 in his free throw attempts. Brandenburg also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Jason Gaskins totaled 13 points for the Wildcats in the win, as he also made a 3-pointer, with three two-pointers, plus he was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Gaskins also had 13 rebounds (eight offensive) for a double-double, plus one assist and two steals.
Carson Hart totaled 10 points for Whiteoak with his points coming from making a 3-point basket, three two-point baskets and he was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, plus he had five rebounds and one assist.
Sawyer Blair finished with six points as he was 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Blair added two rebounds and one assist.
Christopher Wessner finished the game with six points as he sank a 3-point bucket and he was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Wessner added two rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block to his final game totals.
Lucas Pollard ended the game with five points as he too made a 3-pointer, plus he also connected with a basket from the field for two points. Pollard’s final numbers also included four rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Evan Richmond finished the game with two points as he was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line, and he added three rebounds to his night.
In all for the Wildcats, their team totals were 11 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers, and they were 20-of-27 from the free-throw line. They also had 34 team rebounds (17 offensive), nine assists, eight steals and one block.
The Wildcats finished with 11 turnovers, while Manchester had 14 turnovers.
The Greyhounds’ leading scorer was Parker Hayslip with 27 points, as he finished the game with one 3-pointer, nine two-point baskets and he was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. He also collected five rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Elijah Crabtree totaled 13 points for MHS by making three 3-pointers, two two-pointers, and he also had two assists and a block.
The rest of Manchester’s final scoring included: Luke Applegate (2), Landen Doyle (3), Traevyn Hilderbrand (4) and Braylon Beckett (2).
Manchester’s team totals were 15 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers, and they went 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. MHS also had 23 rebounds (seven offensive), 18 assists, nine steals and one block.
The win lifts Whiteoak to an overall record of 9-13, and they finish the SHAC season in the Div. II standings at 4-9.
Manchester stands at 8-14 overall and also 4-9 in the SHAC Div. II standings.
Next for No. 8 seeded Whiteoak (9-13) is a Division VII SE District Quarterfinal Tournament game on Thursday, Feb. 26 at home against the No. 9 seeded Ironton St. Joseph Central Flyers (9-12) at 7 p.m.
