Mustangs unable to fend off host Rockets

Going on the road a few miles down Route 50, the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs dropped a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game to the host Fayetteville Rockets, 65-51 Tuesday evening. 

In the Dec. 9 game, the Mustangs led the Rockets after the first quarter by two points at 13-11, but the Rockets responded with a 19-14 second quarter, taking a halftime lead over the Mustangs 30-27. 

LCHS came back to take the lead when the third quarter came to an end after outscoring the Rockets 17-11 for a 44-41 lead. Then came the fourth quarter where it was Fayetteville taking over, allowing them to take the lead for good for the win as they outscored LCHS, 24-7 in the final eight minutes for the 14-point win over the Mustangs. 

Lynchburg-Clay was led by Denver Clinton with 15 points as the senior made five two-pointers, one 3-pointer and he was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. Clinton also had six rebounds, two assists and two steals. 

Tanner Roberts followed with 14 points by making six two-point buckets, and he was 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. Roberts had another stellar game with six blocks, nine rebounds (five offensive) and one assist. 

The Mustangs also saw Elam Faust with nine points including three two-point baskets, one 3-pointer plus he collected two rebounds and one assist. 

Harley Lewis finished with five points (one 3-pointer), one rebound, one assist and one steal. Also with five points was Trevor Niehaus, as he added one rebound and one assist. Quin Wells totaled three points, one rebound and two assists. The Mustangs also had Linkin Barnett collect two rebounds. 

Overall totals for LCHS included 17 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers, and they were 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. Lynchburg-Clay also had 22 rebounds (six offensive), seven assists, four steals and six blocks, plus they had 11 turnovers. 

The loss sends LCHS to an overall record of 1-3 with a SHAC Division I record of 0-2. Fayetteville improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Div. II SHAC standings.
