One run was all that was needed for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs Monday evening as they earned a hard-fought Southern Hills Athletic Conference victory over the Manchester Greyhounds, 1-0 at Manchester High School.

The Mustangs are still undefeated in the SHAC Division I standings with a 5-0 mark in conference play, as LCHS is 8-2 overall.

Lynchburg-Clay’s lone run came in the top of the fifth inning when Caden Boone singled to second base, scoring Aiden Bene, who initially reached the bases with a lead-off hit by pitch, for the lone run of the game. Bene then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trevor Niehaus and went to third on a passed ball.

Each team finished with four hits, and MHS had one error.

For the Mustangs, Boone was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Harley Lewis was 1-for-3 and Quin Wells was 1-for-3 with a double. LCHS had Bene and Max Baker reach the bases, as both were hit by a pitch. Niehaus also collected a walk in the win.

LCHS also has steals from Elam Faust, Lewis, Luke Davis and Niehaus.

Wells was the winning pitcher as the sophomore pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts. Wells threw 87 pitches, 65 for strikes as he faced 23 batters.

Carson Inman, Braylon Rickett, Kenton Butt and James Hackworth each had a hit for the Greyhounds.

Luke Applegate pitched seven innings in the tough-luck loss for MHS. He allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk and two HBP with 13 strikeouts.
