Lynchburg-Clay advances with tournament win over Belpre

Hosting the Belpre Lady Golden Eagles on Tuesday in a Division VI Quarterfinal match, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs defeated the visiting Belpre Lady Golden Eagles in three straight sets to move on to the district semifinals. 

LCHS won by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-8. 

Lynchburg-Clay totaled 32 kills in the win and were led by Mattie Magee and Halle Greene with eight apiece. Coming in with seven kills was Kylie O’Connor, and next was Bre Rosselott with five. Lynchburg-Clay also had three kills by Addy Carraher and one from Joslyn Rockey. 

Serving was strong for the Lady Mustangs in the postseason win, totaling 11 aces in the three-set match. They were led by O’Connor with four, and with three was Rockey. Having two aces each were Ava McLaughlin and Melany Stephenson. 

LCHS also had two blocks in the match, both by Magee. In digs, the leader was Rockey with 16, as LCHS as a team totaled 63 digs against Belpre. Also with 13 digs was Avery Shope, and next was Jules Vesey with seven. Others collecting digs for the Lady Mustangs were McLaughlin (six), Stephenson (six), Carraher (four), Rosselott (three), Magee (one) and O’Connor (six). 

Lynchburg-Clay also finished with 29 assists in the quarterfinal win, as 28 of those assists were from McLaughlin, while Carraher had one in the win. 

The Lady Mustangs also had 29 serve receptions, with 18 from Rockey and six by Stephenson. Others with receptions were Carraher (one), Shope (two) and Greene (two).

Lynchburg-Clay improves to 18-5 overall, while Belpre ends their season at 2-20 overall. 

Next for No. 4 seeded LCHS is a district seminal game in Division VI, as they will travel to Wellston High School to face Highland County rival, the No. 5 seeded Fairfield Lady Lions (16-7), on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
