Fayetteville gains dominant win over Lynchburg-Clay

DODSONVILLE — On Monday night at Lynchburg-Clay High School, where all-time leading scorer Peyton Scott was inducted in the LCHS Athletic Hall of Fame, the current Lady Mustangs hosted the Fayetteville Lady Rockets.
The Southern Hills Athletic Conference game saw the Lady Mustangs fall to their conference rival 65-25.
Fayetteville controlled the game early as they didn’t trail in the first quarter, leading by as many as 12 points, and eventually led by eight points when the first frame ended by a 20-12 score. That first frame saw Fayetteville lead at 9-2 less than three minutes into the game (at the 5:13 mark), and later they had an 8-0 run to take a 17-6 lead with 1:49 left in the opening frame.
The second frame, each point scored from the 7:42 mark to the 4:40 mark was off either a 3-pointer or a three-point play for both teams, with Fayetteville doing most of the scoring by taking a 21-point lead at 35-14.
In what was a 15-3 run by the Lady Rockets, it began with a 3-pointer from Lilly Carlier, and that was answered with a 3-pointer by LC’s Addy Carraher. The next 12 points scored were all from the Lady Rockets, starting with a three-point play by Christina Murphy, followed by a 3-pointer by Aubrey Barber and another trey off a shot by Carlier. The Lady Rockets added another three off a shot by Lindi Carlier for the 35-14 advantage.
LC broke the scoring run with two points by Lily Ferguson, but the Lady Rockets ended the second quarter with a 7-0 run in the final 3:03 for a halftime lead of 40-16.
Lynchburg-Clay trailed by 30 points when the third quarter ended as Fayetteville started the frame with seven consecutive points. Eventually Fayetteville held a 33-point lead with 2:02 left in the quarter, but ended the third with a 30-point advantage at 53-23.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Rockets led by 40 points, including a fourth quarter where they outscored Lynchburg-Clay 12-2.
Christina Murphy led Fayetteville with 17 points, followed by Aubrey Barber with 13 points. The rest of the Lady Rockets’ scoring included Lindi Carlier (5), Cara Rummel (7), Lily Carlier (9), Scarlett Crawford (5) and Autumn Waddell (9).
Lynchburg-Clay was led by Madison McMullen with six points, followed by Lily Ferguson and Addy Carraher with five points each. The rest of LC’s scoring came from Savannah Bell (2), Joslyn Rockey (4) and Ava McLaughlin (3).
LCHS is now 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the SHAC Division I standings.
Fayetteville improves to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the SHAC Div. II standings.
