Basketball Report: Wildcats, Lady Mustangs play final games of ’24 portion of schedule

Lady Mustangs top Paint Valley

The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs finished the 2024 portion of their schedule with a convincing victory by defeating the visiting Paint Valley Lady Bearcats 50-35 Monday evening.

In their non-conference win at LCHS against PVHS, the Lady Mustangs led 5-2 after the first quarter where all five points for Lynchburg-Clay were scored by Madison McMullen.

LCHS in the second quarter added 13 points with Joslyn Rockey scoring six of those points, including a 3-pointer. The quarter also saw a 3-pointer by Addy Carraher and two points apiece from Lily Ferguson and Ava McLaughlin.

PVHS in the second had five points, leaving the Lady Mustangs in front with an 18-7 halftime lead.

Paint Valley in the third quarter scored 16 points, and the host Lady Mustangs had a 13-point scoring effort in the third frame for a 31-23 lead for LCHS after three quarters.

In the third for LCHS they had five points by Rockey, including anther 3-pointer, plus four points from McMullen and two points each off baskets by Allie Waits and Carraher.

The fourth quarter saw LCHS outscore the Paint Valley squad 19-12. Lynchburg-Clay in the fourth quarter had three 3-pointers from Carraher for nine points, six points off three baskets by Rockey and two points apiece by Savannah Bell and McMullen.

For the game, Lynchburg-Clay was led in the scoring column by Rockey with 17 points, finishing with five two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and she was 1-of-3 from the free-throw line.

Carraher totaled 14 points for the home team, as her points consisted of one two-point basket and four 3-pointers.

LCHS also had 11 points from McMullen, as she made five two-point baskets and she was 1-of-1 from the free-throw line.

Four players each scored two points, and they were Bell, Ferguson, McLaughlin and Waits.

As a team, the Lady Mustangs totaled 14 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers, and they were 4-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Paint Valley was led in scoring by Sophia Stauffer with 13 points.  

The win moves LC’s overall record to 3-6, and they are 1-5 in the SHAC standings this season.

Wildcats fall to Mohawks

The Whiteoak Wildcats hosted the Northwest Mohawks on Monday, and in their final game of the 2024 part of the schedule the Wildcats were defeated by the visitors, 53-39 at Whiteoak High School.

In the non-conference contest the Wildcats led 12-11 after the first quarter, but NWHS outscored the Wildcats 12-10 in the second quarter for a 23-22 NWHS lead at halftime.

Whiteoak’s first-quarter scoring saw Sawyer Blair and Aiden Crowe each score three points as each made a 3-pointer, while Brady Brandenburg scored four points off two baskets in the first quarter, plus Jonah Michael netted two points for Whiteoak in the first frame.

The second quarter for the Wildcats consisted of four points by Michael off two baskets, and two points each were scored by Zander Roades, Crowe and Christopher Wessner.

Each team scored 13 points in the third frame, and for the Wildcats Blair made four free throws; Zach Igo, Roades, and Brandenburg each scored two points; and Jackson Tedford sank a free throw.

As WHS trailed by only a point after three quarters at 34-33, the fourth frame got away from the Wildcats as the Mohawks outscored Whiteoak, 19-6. WHS had a 3-pointer by Roades, two points from Blair and one point from Brandenburg in the final quarter.

Northwest in the final frame had three 3-pointers, two two-point baskets, and they were 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.

NWHS was led in scoring for the game by Brenden Vice with 25 points as he made four 3-pointers, five two-point baskets and he was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.

As a team, the Mohawks totaled 11 two-point baskets, seven 3-pointers and they were 10-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Whiteoak was led by Blair with nine points, as he made one two-point basket and a 3-pointer, plus he went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Roades scored seven points with two two-point buckets and a 3-pointer, while teammate Brandenburg also scored seven points with three two-point baskets and one made free throw on two attempts.

The rest of the WHS scoring included Michael (6), Crowe (5), Igo (2), Wessner (2) and Tedford (1).

Team totals for WHS were 12 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers, and they finished 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.

WHS is now 3-7 overall, and they have a 2-5 record in the SHAC.
