Lady Indians take down Westfall, Washington and Williamsburg; Spruell tosses no-hitter

From Thursday though Saturday, the Hillsboro Lady Indians earned four wins in three days, defeating the Westfall Lady Mustangs on Thursday, Washington Lady Blue Lions on Friday in a Frontier Athletic Conference game, and on Saturday they won twice against Williamsburg.

The recent wins improve Hillsboro to 14-2 overall this season, as they are 6-0 in the FAC.

On Thursday the Lady Indians won on the road at Westfall by a 6-5 score, with Hillsboro rallying from trailing by two runs to winning the game by a run off a three-run seventh inning.

In the game, Westfall led 6-1 after three innings with the Lady Mustangs scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and having a three-run third inning. HHS scored a run in the top of the third, then added a run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and gained the game-winning runs with the aforementioned three-run top of the seventh inning.

HHS totaled 11 hits and committed four errors, and Westfall had 10 hits and three errors.

Hannah Burton was 4-for-4 to lead the Lady Indians at the plate, scoring one run, with one RBI and a steal.

Chloe Roberts finished 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI and one of her two hits was a home run.

Also for HHS, Kinsey Gilliland finished 1-for-4 with a home run, one run and two RBI. Camryn Spruell went 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Addie Huff was also 1-for-4 with a run.

Isabelle Brunck finished 1-for-3, and Rhianna Clemons went 1-for-2 (a double) and a walk.

Burton was also the winning pitcher. In the circle, she allowed six unearned runs on 10 hits and four walks, while collecting three strikeouts in seven innings. Burton threw 114 pitches, 69 for strikes, and she faced 39 batters.

Friday saw the Lady Indians battle through some inclement weather in Washington Court House as they defeated the host Lady Blue Lions, 15-3 in five innings, moving to 6-0 in the FAC.

HHS and Washington were tied at 1-1 after the first inning, then HHS took the lead with a run in the top of the second. They took away any chance of a Washington comeback with 10 runs in the top of the third, followed by a two-run fourth and one-run fifth for the 12-run victory.

HHS collected 18 hits and had no errors, while Washington had two hits and committed six errors.

The game saw Camryn Spruell pitch five innings for the win, as she allowed three earned runs on two hits and six walks. She finished with nine strikeouts in five innings in the circle with 97 pitches, 53 for strikes and she faced 23 batters.

Six Hillsboro players finished with a multi-hit game, including two of those players — Spruell and Isabelle Brunck — adding three hits in the FAC win.

Spruell was 3-for-3 with a grand slam home run, four RBI, two runs and a walk. Brunck finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, and three RBI.

Eowyn Brown ended the game 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBI, a double and a walk. Hannah Burton finished 2-for-4, scoring two runs, hitting a double and collecting an RBI. Addie Huff was 2-for-4 and she scored a run for the Lady Indians. Also with two hits was Mylea Fridley at 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks.

Kinsey Gilliland ended the day 1-for-4 with two runs, a double and a walk. Chloe Roberts was 1-for-3 with a run and a double, while Chloe Page was 1-for-1, and Rhianna Clemons went 1-for-4 with a double and one run.

HHS was back on the softball field on Saturday as they won a non-conference doubleheader against Williamsburg at home, by scores of 10-0 and 8-4.

In game one, the Lady Indians saw Camryn Spruell toss a no-hitter, as the sophomore threw five innings, allowing no runs on no hits and three walks. Spruell struck out 13 batters, throwing 89 pitches, 57 for strikes, and the sophomore faced 18 batters in the Saturday win.

At the plate, HHS didn’t disappoint with eight hits in the game, with Kinsey Gilliland going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBI. Spruell was also 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and one RBI.

Chloe Roberts also went 2-for-3 with a triple, one run and two RBI.

Eowyn Brown finished 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Hannah Burton collected an RBI, and Isabelle Brunck was 1-for-3 with a run.

Addie Huff scored a run, and Rhianna Clemons finished with a run and a walk.

The second game for Hillsboro saw them defeat Williamsburg, 8-4.

Brown led HHS at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a steal. Also leading the Lady Indians at the plate was Spruell, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, two runs, three RBI and she had a steal.

Burton was 1-for-4, Brown went 1-for-3 with a run, and Halle Reveal was 1-of-1 with a run. Morgan Garman ended the second game at 1-for-3 with two runs and a steal. Chloe Page finished 1-for-3, and Kinsey Gilliland scored a run.

Burton earned the win as she pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks. She struck out one batter, finishing the game throwing 92 pitches, 62 for strikes, with 32 batters faced.
