Indians break away for victory over Tigers

The Hillsboro Indians earned their second win of the 2023 season and did so in a convincing manner, gaining their first Frontier Athletic Conference win along the way, as they defeated the visiting McClain Tigers, 10-3 at Richard Shaffer Park, Monday in the Highland County rivalry showdown.
Hillsboro (1-3, 2-10) scored at least one run in each of the first five innings played against McClain, and allowed the Tigers to score runs in just one inning, where MHS scored three runs in the top of the fourth.
As for the Indians, they scored two runs in the first inning, then equaled the feat in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. HHS improved their lead to 5-0 after the third inning.
Both MHS (0-5, 6-7-1) and Hillsboro each scored three runs in the fourth for an 8-3 Hillsboro lead, and the home team Indians added two final runs in the bottom of the fifth.
In all for Hillsboro, they totaled 10 runs, 10 hits and committed two errors. McClain had three runs, three hits and committed six errors.
Korbin Adams was a standout player for the Indians on Monday, finishing 4-for-4 with a double, two runs, four RBI and two steals en route to the win.
Brayden Hunter went 2-for-3 as he also added a double, one run, three RBI and a walk to his final totals against the Tigers. Ovid Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Also for the Indians, Nic Burns was 1-for-4 with three runs and a steal, Bryce Parsons scored a run, Jackson Cornell stole a base and Travis Ross scored a a run and had a steal. The Indians also saw Garet Thompson force a walk, and Walker Pence finished 1-for-4 with two runs and a steal.
For McClain, Jayden Allison was 1-for-3 with a run, Seth Weller went 1-for-3 with a double and a run, and Tanner Dalton finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Haydon Hice for MHS drew a walk and had a steal, Kaden Penwell walked once, and Owen Sykes had a steal.
Thompson was the winning pitcher, as he pitched all seven innings, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and two walks. Thompson totaled 11 strikeouts, throwing 101 pitches, 66 for strikes, facing a total of 28 batters.
Penwell was charged with the loss, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs (two earned runs) on eight hits and no walks. He finished with four strikeouts, throwing 63 pitches, 41 for strikes, all while facing 22 batters.
