Hillsboro, McClain track and field athletes combine for 7 district championships; Lady Tigers earn 2nd place as a team

Hillsboro and McClain boys and girls track and field athletes are moving on to regionals, after a strong showing at the Div. II Southeast District Meet in Washington Court House May 14 and 18. The event included a district runner-up trophy for the Lady Tigers and a combined seven event championships for Hillsboro and McClain, along with other top four finishes.
The McClain Lady Tigers finished second as a team with 91 points, with Circleville winning with 122.5 points. The Hillsboro Lady Indians were fifth with 63 points.
The Hillsboro boys team also earned a Top 5 finish, coming in third with 89.5 points, and McClain boys were 11th with 16 points.
The McClain 4x100 girls relay team of Luca Matesic, Brenna Wright, Katie Cook and Kaitlyn Jett won the district championship with a time of 49.99, breaking the district meet record (which was set by a previous MHS relay team in 2017). Hillsboro’s team of Meredith Dietrick, Chanel Captain, Kelsey Gilkison and Allison Browning is also advancing to regionals, as they placed fourth with a time of 52.57.
Hillsboro had two relay teams earn district titles. The Hillsboro 4x200 girls relay team of Alizeh Hudson, Chanel Captain, Kobie Miles and Olivia Covault won a district championship, finishing with a time of 1:47.56. Winning the boys 4x800 relay was the team of Corbin Winkle, Ryan Howland, Chris Sowders and Tate Davis, who won the race at 8:19.84.
McClain’s Brenna Wright won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.81, in an event where three Highland County athletes advanced. McClain’s Adalynn Snyder was third (16.88), and Hillsboro’s Kobie Miles finished fourth (17.13). Wright won a second individual district title in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 47.72, while Miles again qualified with a fourth-place finish (49.96).
Hillsboro’s Jailyn Williams was an individual district champion, as she won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.24 and set as new school record.
Three Highland County pole vaulters are advancing to regionals, with McClain’s Jackson Crago (12-4) winning a district title in the boys event, while Hillsboro’s Austin Bledsoe (12-4) was second in the boys event. Also finishing district runner-up was McClain’s Becca Bergstrom (9-0) in the girls event.
In the boys 1600m run, Hillsboro’s Corbin Winkle was district runner-up with a time of 4:40.70, and he was also second place in the 3200m run at 10:27.42. His teammate Rason Brunck is also advancing in the 3200m run with a 10:49.62 finish, good for fourth place.
Both Highland County girls 4x400 relay teams are moving on to regionals, with McClain finishing second and Hillsboro in third. The MHS team of Kaitlyn Jett, Brenna Wright, Larah Henson and Becca Bergstrom had a time of 4:16.26, and the HHS team of Alizeh Hudson, Jailyn Williams, Olivia Covault and Taylor Thoroman finished in 4:16.65.
Two Highland County athletes advanced in the boys 400-meter dash. Earning a second-place finish was Hillsboro’s Cooper Swope, who ran a 52.06, while McClain’s TD Matesic was fourth at 52.45.
In the 400-meter dash, Hillsboro’s Olivia Covault was third place with a time of 1:02.39. McClain’s Lily Barnes also earned two third-place finishes: in the discus event with a throw of 116-2, and in the shot put with a throw of 35-5.
Advancing to regionals with a third-place finish was Hillsboro’s girls 4x800 relay team of Bree Bailey, Taylor Thoroman, Ramsey Haines and Jailyn Williams, who had a time of 10:34.86.
McClain’s Luca Matesic was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.19.
The Hillsboro boys 4x400 relay team finished fourth, as Austin Bledsoe, Tate Davis, Ryan Howland and Cooper Swope had a final time of 3:35.04.
Several Hillsboro boys athletes also advanced to regionals with a fourth-place individual finish. Earning a fourth-place finish in the boys 800-meter run was Hillsboro’s Tate Davis (1:59.38). In the 110m hurdles, Collin Swackhammer was fourth with a time of 16.41. Ayden Clemons was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 47-7.
