Tigers fall at home to Blue Lions

In a showcase game for the Frontier Athletic Conference Monday at Tom Hixson Field inside of Mitchell Park in Greenfield, the McClain Tigers hosted the Washington Blue Lions, where it was the visitors gaining the upper hand and defeating McClain, 7-2. 

The conference loss saw the Tigers collect five hits, but they committed four errors, while the Blue Lions had six hits and one error. 

Neither team scored a run in the first inning, but Washington struck first with five runs in the top of the second. MHS cut into the lead of the Blue Lions with two runs in the bottom of the second for a 5-2 deficit. 

Both teams didn’t score runs in the third and fourth innings, but the Blue Lions scored two final runs in the top of the fifth to seal the win, as MHS and Washington were both scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings. 

Five McClain players had one hit each, with Connor Chandler going 1-for-4 with a steal. Carson Chandler was 1-for-2 with one run and a walk. 

Easton Ary finished 1-for-3 with a run, while teammate Eli Douglas was 1-for-2 with a walk and a steal. Matthew Cummins finished 1-for-3. 

Ary pitched 4.1 innings with three strikeouts. Benny Vangundy pitched 2.2 innings, with two strikeouts and no earned runs. 

Washington was led by Sam Lotz at 3-for-3 with one run, three RBI and two walks with a double. He was also the winning pitcher with 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks with 14 strikeouts. 

The Tigers now stand at 6-2 overall and 1-2 in the FAC. Washington improves to 1-2 in the FAC and 3-4 overall. 

Next for the Tigers was a road non-conference game on Tuesday, April 14 against the Unioto Shermans at 5 p.m.
