The McClain varsity boys soccer team was shut out, 12-0 by a senior-led Cavaliers team in Greenfield Thursday, Sept. 12.

Not only were the Tigers beaten by a much more experienced squad that had 12 returning lettermen (all seniors), but McClain was also without one of their best players, Creed Davis, who was not able to play.

“Chillicothe is probably the best team that we will play all year, and they are definitely one of the two best teams in the FAC [Frontier Athletic Conference] year in and year out,” said McClain head coach John Gill. “They are also a couple of divisions higher than us, and they are a veteran team with I think 12 or 13 seniors, which is just crazy.

“We wanted to go out today and not be intimidated, just compete and play as hard as we could and see what would happen. Everyone on our team got into the game and played, and that’s really what we’ve tried to do in every game so far this year.”

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead with five different players having goals, led by Alex Powers, who netted two.

In the second half, Chillicothe duplicated what they did in the first by scoring six more goals, as this time it was Carter Dunsbe who had a pair of scores, which gave him a hat trick for the night.

“I thought Caden Hargett, who is just a sophomore, came in tonight and did a great job at defensive-mid for us, which is where Creed (Davis) usually plays,” Gill said. “I’m still pretty happy with how we played for most of the game. Chillicothe came out fast scoring goals, but I thought as the game went on, we played a lot better.

“Every game now is going to be a little more difficult because the FAC is really good, but my guys will continue to work hard wanting to get better, and we’ll see what happens.”
