Lions baseball upends visiting Rockets and Green Devils

Monday (April 7) saw the Fairfield Lions earn an important Southern Hills Athletic Conference win by defeating the visiting Fayetteville Rockets, 11-5 at Fairfield High School.
The Lions had a strong start with a two-run bottom of the first inning and led 2-1 after the second inning finished. By the time the third inning came to a close, the Lions were in front by a 9-2 score, as they outscored the Rockets 7-1 in the third inning.
From there, each team scored two runs apiece in the fourth inning for an 11-4 Lions lead, and the Rockets finished the scoring with a run rounding the bases in the top of the seventh inning for the final 11-5 finish.
The Lions ended the day with 13 hits and one error, while Fayetteville had six hits and four errors on the day.
Six Fairfield players each had two hits, as Corey Zimmerman was 2-for-4 with three runs, one RBI and a walk.
Cameron Miller went 2-for-4 with one run and was hit by a pitch. Zane Matthews was 2-for-4 with a double, one run and three RBI. Corbin Willey finished the day at 2-for-4 with a run, and Caleb Rice was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and one walk.
Zach Ahsaruk was 1-for-3 with one run and a walk for the Lions. Blaine Fauber ended his day with one run and a walk.
Fauber, Willey, Matthews, Zimmerman and Rice each had a stolen base.
Willey pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with four strikeouts on 43 pitches. Ben Miller pitched 4.1 innings, where he allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and eight walks with five strikeouts on 105 pitches.

On Tuesday, April 9, the Fairfield Lions hosted the North Adams Green Devils in another SHAC contest, where the Lions added another conference win, defeating the visiting Green Devils 10-9 at Fairfield High School.
The Lions built a 4-0 lead after a two-run first inning, followed with two more runs in the bottom of the second. After North Adams scored three runs in the top of the third, the Lions scored a run in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-3 lead.
Neither team scored a run in the fifth, and the Green Devils broke out for a six-run sixth inning for a 9-5 lead. The Lions had the answer with five runs going to their side of the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth for the eventual 10-9 win.
For the game, the Lions finished with 12 hits and they committed five errors, while the Green Devils had eight hits and they committed two errors.
Zane Matthews ended the game with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, finishing with three runs and two RBI with two of his hits being doubles. Matthews was also hit by a pitch, and he had two stolen bases.
Corey Zimmerman was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and Corbin Willey went 2-for-2, scoring a run while collecting two RBI, two walks and a steal. Blaine Fauber ended the day at 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Cameron Miller was 1-for-1 with one run, one RBI, a steal and a walk. Zach Ahsaruk finished 1-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. Caleb Rice was 1-for-4 with a run as his hit was a double. Ben Miller scored one run and collected an RBI.
Fauber was the winning pitcher, as he pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and no walks, with two strikeouts.
Cameron Miller pitched 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks, with six strikeouts. Miller threw 108 pitches, and Fauber threw 20 pitches.
FHS now stands at 3-2 overall.
