Love was all around Monday night as Highland County Democrats gathered at the Chillicothe Avenue headquarters to welcome a flurry of new members, new ideas and special guests.
Events Chair Linda Emery presented the first-quarter calendar, starting with the shared observance of International Women’s Day, co-sponsored and hosted by the YMCA, on March 7.
She says, “This is is a global event celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women everywhere. Community organizations and groups will offer information about services and programs for women from 10-12, and local women leaders will be speaking between 1-2.”
The annual spring dinner and May’s Derby Night were also confirmed at the meeting.
Special guest speaker Arlene Cole shared some of the history, goals and honorees of Hillsboro’s African American Awareness Research Council, and also the news there will be five AAARC scholarship recipients this year.
“They are amazing students, and we are very proud to be able to help them follow their dreams,” she said.
The scholarships and accompanying program will officially be presented Feb. 15 at the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene starting at 1 p.m.
Special guest Angelina Rogers, of Progress Grove City, offered the resources of her 500-member volunteer group to assist with networking, community building and voter registration efforts.
Rogers said, “It’s wonderful to see such an enthusiastic full house. All across the state, we see people ready and willing to be more active now. We want to help all of you work together to strengthen your impact.”
The décor of hearts, flowers and teddy bears on every table provided a warm and fuzzy setting for the meeting, and attendees were rewarded for their attendance with an array of baked treats, specialty confections and Janis Snyder’s Valentine punch.
Snyder, who is working with Teresa Grimsley on outreach to the Greenfield area, said, “You could tell there was a lot of love in the air — every committee sign-up sheet was full.”
Cole closed the meeting with an invitation for all to attend Saturday’s AAARC program, adding her heartfelt belief, “We have to work together to make our county a better place for all of us.”
