Virgil Alonzo McFarland passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92 on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021.
He was born April 21, 1928 in Harlan, Ky., the son of the late Benjamin and Roxie (Hubbs) McFarland.
He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served from 1948-55. He was a member of the American Legion Post 888 and retired from General Motors after 22 years of service.
Virgil loved spending time with his children and friends, especially his friends at McDonald’s (the McDonald’s gang) as well as the Highland County Senior Citizens Center. He loved going to the flea market and yard sales as well as fixing watches, VCRs and whatever he could tinker with. He always had a contagious smile and loved cracking jokes. He lived a happy life and is now in the hands of the Lord. He will be missed by many and forever in his family’s hearts.
He is survived by four children, Rickey (Pon) McFarland, David (Kimberly) McFarland, Vicky (Alan) Roberts and Karen (Darren) Ahrmann; seven grandchildren, Justin McFarland, Danielle McFarland, Sarah Roberts, Sheila (Pete) Jackson, Sam (Nicky) Roberts, Joshua Ahrmann and Kristina Ahrmann; nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, with one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild on the way.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McFarland was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Eva (Dick) McFarland, who passed away Nov. 7, 2012; and six siblings, Imogene, Edward, Esteila, Arthur, Marie and Mildred.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, 2021 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021 at noon at the funeral home. Bob Stevens will officiate. Burial with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
