Virgie L. Merritt, 81, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe.
She was born July 8, 1940 in Jackson County, Ky., the daughter of Caleb and Anna Marie (Vickers) Stapleton.
She attended Hickory Flat School in Tyner, Ky., then moved to Greenfield and attended Fairfield School in Leesburg. In the ’60s, she was employed at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, followed by employment at Greenfield Hospital. She was later employed at Greenfield Research and retired after 33 years of employment.
She was a loving mother of four whom had a green thumb, was an artist and shared her drawings/paintings. She had a passion for cooking and baking.
She is survived by three sons, Glenn (Lora) Merritt of Chillicothe, Wesley (Shelly) Merritt of Frankfort and Jerrold Merritt of Greenfield; one daughter, Susie Gill of Greenfield; three grandchildren, James Merritt, Logan Merritt and Melanie (John) Peters; two great-grandchildren, Phoebe and Trenton; two brothers, Carlos (Evelyn) Stapleton of Greenfield and James (Pam) Stapleton of Washington C.H.; one sister, Jewell Deaton of Greenfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Orville Jay Stapleton; three sisters, Lucy Ellen Stapleton, Dorothy Cross and Cleda Merritt; and both parents.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield with Pastor Kevin Stuckey officiating. Burial will follow in the Gilboa Cemetery near New Petersburg.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
