Vernon R. Shaffer, 98, died Sept. 13, 2017 in Winchester, Va.

Mr. Shaffer was predeceased by his wife of 75 years, Verna Larrick Shaffer; and his two brothers, Eugene Shaffer and Phillip Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer was a veteran of World War II. He was a radioman aboard the USS William D. Porter in the Pacific Campaign. He survived the sinking of his ship in 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the attack.

Mr. Shaffer was born in Sharonville to Elmer and Ruth Shaffer. He and Verna were high school sweethearts after meeting in the band class. The pair lived in Cincinnati for over 50 years.

Mr. Shaffer retired after 34 years with The First National Bank of Cincinnati, now US Bank. He was an officer with the National Association for Bank Audit, Control & Operation (NABAC) and a member of Financial Executives Institute (FEI). Mr. Shaffer enjoyed playing golf with his “golf group,” volunteering as the treasurer for the Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church for over 30 years, spending time on their farm and being with family.

He is survived by his sister, Joanna Morris; and two daughters, Melanie Shaffer Henry and Pamela (Richard) Burke. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Scott Shaffer (Kimberly) Henry and Kathryn (Charles) Rounds; and two great-grandchildren, Aden and Finley Rounds.

Services will be held at a later date in care of Spring Grove Funeral Homes.
