Vaughn Ayers Burton, 86, of Lynchburg, passed away April 12, 2017 at the Hospice of Dayton with his family by his side.
He was born Feb. 16, 1931 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Wilmer and Myrtle Louise (Ayers) Burton.
He graduated from Lynchburg High School in the class of 1949. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was trained as an aircraft engine mechanic in Tennessee and assigned to the U.S. Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas. He retired from the Air Force Reserves as a master sergeant after 26 years of service. While serving the Department of the Air Force in 1995, he was stationed at Clinton County Air Force Base when it was transferred to Rickenbacker Air Force Base in 1971. He was promoted to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1977 as aircraft maintenance foreman until his retirement after 35 years in 1986. He was also retired from the Clinton County Vocational School System where he served as a teacher's aide.
He was a member of the Dodsonville Community Church, the Lynchburg Masonic Lodge 178 F&AM, Wilmington American Legion Post 0049, Lynchburg Pistol Club and he was also a member of the CCAFB, RAFB and WPAFB “Breakfast with Friends.” He enjoyed motorcycles, horses and spending time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed riding horses at Shawnee State Forest and living in the country. He will be missed.
Mr. Burton is survived by his wife of 31 years, Juianna (Barker) Burton of Lynchburg, whom he married Jan. 4, 1986 in Lynchburg. He is also survived by two sons, Vaughn Randall (Brenda Knisley) Burton and Russell Ervin (Christine) Burton both of Wilmington; two granddaughters, Sasha (Brian) Zavacky of Evans City, Pa. and Sheena (Tyler) Henry of Wilmington; one great-granddaughter, Addison Zavacky; and a great-grandson, Owen Russell Zavacky; three sisters-in-law, Roseann Burton of St. Martin, Linda Barker of Smyrna, Ga., and Catherine Futch of Smyrna, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathleen (Realeigh) Roe; and two twin brothers, Ronald Burton and Donald Burton.
In keeping with his wishes, his body will be cremated. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday April 22 at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home in Lynchburg. Visitation will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 22 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard will take place following the memorial service in the Lynchburg Masonic Cemetery.
