Susan Evelyn Archibald passed away Dec. 20, 2016 in Hillsboro.
She was born May 21, 1928 to the late Harry and Nora (Coldiron) Dorton.
She was born at home on the family farm in the Danville community, the youngest of five children. She told many wonderful stories about growing up on the farm, such as riding alongside her father in the hay wagon and in the special seat he had made for her on his plow as he worked the fields with their team of horses; having to run up their long lane after school so the old ewe wouldn't butt her; and playing with her pet pig, Sally. She was bribed with gum and other treats by her sister's boyfriends so she would leave them alone in the family parlor.
She attended school at both the Danville schoolhouse and Hillsboro City Schools, graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1947. She remembered being able to enjoy "store-bought" treats by trading her sandwiches with her classmates at the "Hillsboro" school. Her mother still baked her own bread and churned her own butter, and it was delicious.
After graduation, Susan moved to Cincinnati, where she worked for two years at the Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company to earn tuition money for college. She then attended Milligan College in Tennessee, where she met her future husband, Thomas Archibald. Susan and Tom were married on July 24, 1953 at the Danville Church of Christ. Although planning to return to Tennessee where Tom was planning to start graduate studies in the fall, Tom was offered a job as youth minister at the Hillsboro Church of Christ, and the couple made Hillsboro home.
Susan worked as bookkeeper for the Fairley Hardware Company and then later worked alongside Tom at the Highland Broadcasting Company, WSRW, serving as office manager and bookkeeper for the company until they sold to Clear Channel in 1999.
Susan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her church, family and friends were the heart and soul of her life. The door to her kitchen was always open with good food and conversation. Her house was open to anyone who needed a place to stay. Throughout her life, she was happy to contribute her organizational, sewing and cooking skills to the many civic, school and church groups for whom she volunteered. She taught Sunday school and VBS, was a Pack and Den Mother in scouting, homeroom mom and PTA member, band and choir booster and was part of the team that organized and started the Little Lamb Christian Preschool. Her children all remember her as the first person up in the morning and the last person to bed.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Archibald; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Lisa Archibald of Hillsboro and Matthew and Donna Archibald of Lancaster; a daughter and son-in-law, Kelley and Greg Van Zant of Hillsboro; and 11 grandchildren, Emily and Rachael Archibald, Benjamin, Luke (Lindsey), Lydia, Miriam, Aaron and Samuel Archibald and Elisabeth (Andrew) Lampe and Gregory and Hannah Van Zant.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ellis and William Dorton; and sisters, Ruby Gossett and Mary Davis Ernst.
Friends and family are invited to a service of remembrance to be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 in the Fellowship Hall of the Hillsboro Church of Christ, 155 West Walnut Street, Hillsboro, Ohio. The Turner & Son Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
