Shirley Ann Fisch, 87, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2022 in Greensboro, N.C., after a long battle with dementia.
She was born Shirley Ann Tennenbaum on April 19, 1935, in Greenfield, Ohio. Her parents, Hyman and Marky Tennenbaum, both of blessed memory, were active members of the Greenfield community. Hyman, a highly respected businessman who managed Greenfield’s United Department Store, proudly named a woman’s clothing store, the Shirley Shop, after his new daughter. After graduating from McClain High School in Greenfield, Shirley attended The Ohio State University, graduating with a degree in dental hygiene.
After college, Shirley married and raised three children, moving with her family over the years from Cleveland, Albuquerque, Long Beach, Beachwood (Ohio), and in 1970, Phoenix. Once in Arizona, Shirley resumed her career as a dental hygienist while continuing as a full-time mother and homemaker. In addition to working at a Phoenix dental practice, she also volunteered for the Arizona Department of Corrections, providing free dental hygiene services to inmates at the Arizona State Prison in Florence, Arizona. She was also active in civic affairs for many years as a member of the Phoenix League of Women Voters, as well as serving on citizen planning committees for the City of Phoenix.
Shirley married Alvin Fisch, of blessed memory, on Feb. 23, 1992, which was the wedding anniversary of her parents. They spent 22 very happy years together before his passing in 2014. In addition to Al, Shirley was predeceased by her beloved sister, Beverlee, of blessed memory.
The role in which she took her greatest pride was as a mother and grandmother. She is survived by her three children, David, Susan and Robert, and her grandchildren, Matthew, Cameron, and Hayden. She is also survived by her nephew, Harry B. “Bud” Leslie, III, her niece Sharon Leslie Bain, and her stepsons, Rick and Steve Fisch.
Funeral services were held at Beth El Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz. on May 3. A memorial service will be held at Greensboro, N.C. on May 9.
