Samuel Charles “Sam” Barnhouse, 66, of Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016 at the Select Specialty South Hospital in Columbus.

Sam was born July 27, 1950 in Gallipolis, the son of the late Orville Franklin and Florence Edna (Watson) Barnhouse.

Sam graduated from Wellston High School, class of 1968, attended Ohio University and received his bachelor of education in 1972. Sam started his teaching career with the Hillsboro City Schools, where he taught and coached. He furthered his education and received his master of education in 1975 from Xavier University. Sam retired from the Hillsboro City Schools in 2007 after 35 years of service. With his love of education and his students, Sam was elected to the Hillsboro City School Board, where he was serving his second term.

Sam was a member of Highland Lodge 38 F.&A.M., Hillsboro Council 16 R.&S.M., Hillsboro Chapter 40 R.A.M., Highland Commandery 31 Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati and Syrian Shrine of Cincinnati. He was a football official for 25 years for OHSAA, a member of the Highland County Retired Teachers Association, a longtime Ohio State fan, had a great smile and was a loving husband, dad and friend.

On Dec. 15, 1973, Sam was united in marriage to Dr. Lisa (Lockard) Barnhouse, who survives. He is also survived by one son, William F. “Will” Barnhouse of Boynton Beach, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Samantha A. Barnhouse and Grant Kibbey of Radnor; his dog, Woody; mother-in-law, Jackie Lockard of Wellston; brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Tanya Barnhouse of Jackson; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William Thomas “Chip” and Alix Marduel Lockard of San Francisco, Calif. and George and Ann Helbling of Dresden; nieces and nephews, Charlie (Alyssa) Barnhouse, Mallory (Justin) Kupfer, Zoe Lockard, Brice Lockard, Tommy (Simone) Helbling and Andy (Stephanie) Helbling; an aunt and uncle; several cousins; and a host of friends.

Besides his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his father-in-law, William Thomas Lockard.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 at the Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Rev. Tom Zile will officiate. Graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Ridgewood Cemetery in Wellston.

Visitation will be held from 4:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 at the Hillsboro High School Gymnasium, 550 U.S. 62 South, Hillsboro.
