R. Lowell McCarty, 94, of Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021 at the Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati.
He was born Feb. 15, 1927 in Peebles, the son of the late Ralph Edgar McCarty and Inez Opal (Swisshelm) McCarty.
Lowell proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII and served one year of his duty in Italy. He earned his bachelor’s from the Indiana Institute of Technology in 1950. He was baptized at an early age in the Peebles Methodist Church, and later in his life he became a member of the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. Lowell was a 65-year member of the Peebles Masonic Lodge #581 F&AM, and most recently moved his membership to the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge #38 F&AM.
He opened his own consulting engineering business McCarty Associates in 1962. He was the Highland County Engineer for 24 years, from 1969 through 1993. After retiring, Lowell and Elizabeth moved to Florida for 15 years before coming back to Hillsboro.
Lowell is survived by five children, Michael (Mary Ellen) McCarty, Robert “Bob” (Nancy) Everson, Betsi Brockmeier, David (Cathy) Everson and Joanne (Jim) Hogle; 13 grandchildren, Christopher McCarty, Kevin McCarty, Stacy (Josh) Pennington, Jenny (Eric) Binion, Kate (Steve) Brockmeier, Matt Jandes, Drew (Jennifer) Jandes, David Everson, and Casi (Zak) Poliak, Ryan (Lauren Roszell) Dimick, Emily (Nick) Miller, Chelsea (Brian) Carman and Alex (Rose) Hogle; 14 great-grandchildren, Ella Jandes, Andrew Jandes, Madeline Jandes, Joshua Jason Pennington, Hunter Pennington, Jackson Miller, Benjamin Miller, Zara Carpenter, Gunnar Binion, Liron Binion, Jovan Binion, Holland Binion, Josiah Roszell and Macy Roszell; a sister, Carolyn Goodman; a son-in-law, Joe Jandes; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, Lowell was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Dunkin) McCarty, in 1967; his second wife, Elizabeth (Dunlap) McCarty, in 2017; a daughter, Susan Jandes, in 2020; and a grandson, Jason Everson.
In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated. Visitation will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 from 1-3 p.m. at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. following visitation on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. Dr. Derek Russell will be officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
