Paul E. Shanks Sr., 83, of Hillsboro, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, at Bethesda North Hospital in Montgomery.

He was born Nov. 25, 1938, in Xenia, the son of the late William and Mary Catherine (Walsh) Shanks.

He retired from ODOT after many years of service. He enjoyed spending his vacations in the Great Smokey Mountains, and he enjoyed old cars in his younger days and recently enjoyed spending as much time with his granddaughter, Sammie, and great-grandsons as often as he could.

He is survived by one son, Paul (Becky) Shanks of Hillsboro; one granddaughter, Samantha (Kevin) Swallen of Hillsboro; two great-grandsons, Ruger and Colton Swallen; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Everetts and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Turner, both of Hillsboro.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice (Palmer) Shanks, on March 4, 2013; seven sisters, Sara, Ruth, Lexia, Dorothy and Bertha Shanks, Florence Butts and Margaret Coates; and seven brothers, Lester, Russell, Floyd, Robert, Richard, Ralph and Harold Shanks.

Funeral service will be Monday, Jan. 17, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro with Brother Wylie Perkins officiating. Burial will follow in the New Market Baptist Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of the service on Monday at the funeral home.
