Norman E. Ludwick, 90, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at his home.
He was born Jan. 13, 1932, in Hillsboro, the son of the late Glenn and Margaret L. (Houk) Ludwick.
Norman helped work around his house as a child for years, before starting his professional life when he was about 12. He had a daytime paper route and in the evenings, he set pins at the White Cloud Bowling Alley on West Main Street, across the street where he grew up. When Norman was 14, he started working at an Ashland Gas Station, across from the old high school, then when he turned 15, he took over his father’s dairy route in the mornings before school.
He enjoyed fixing up bicycles to resell and “hustling” cars. After graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1951, he proudly served his country for four years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After he completed his duty in the Army, he and Charlie Dodds started a 12-year partnership at an Ashland Gas Station in Hillsboro. Norman really enjoyed his time working with Charlie. Norman and partner Tom Goolsby opened Sherwood Auto in 1966, and he was a Coachmen Dealer for 48 years. Sherwood Auto became Sherwood Auto and Camper Sales around 1970, and he once said, “He would work until he was 100 if he was able.”
He was a big supporter of the Highland County 4-H, and he wanted every child to learn an excellent work ethic and to succeed. Norman enjoyed going to the Indianapolis 500, and he never missed a race from 1950-2015. He loved serving the public, loved his customers, and he was a friend to everyone. He will be greatly missed.
Norman is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma Jean Ludwick, whom he married on Aug. 23, 1959; two children, Ronnie (Barbara) Ludwick of Hillsboro and Teresa Ludwick of Hillsboro; two grandchildren, Ryan Ludwick of Hillsboro and Brandon Ludwick of Hillsboro; a nephew, Kenneth “Butch” Bradford; a niece, Charlotte Holloway; a great-nephew, Rick (Joellen) Bradford; his first cousin, Ken Ludwick; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Taylor Wayne Ludwick; a sister, Mildred Bradford; and a brother, Elwood Ludwick.
Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family. Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will be held in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
