Marilyn Atsalis, 91, of Hobe Sound, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025.
She was born Dec. 10, 1933 in Hillsboro, the daughter of the late James Henry Head and Helen Rogers.
Marilyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hobe Sound, Fla. She was a physical education teacher for over 40 years at Wilmington City Schools, pioneering the girls track program. In her later life, she was involved in a ladies 18-hole golf league, captain of the bocce team, line dance leader at Eaglewood County Club, where she resided with her husband, Bill. She was an impactful member of Love and Hope in Action, crocheting a magnitude of items for the homeless.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Bill Atsalis; sons, David (Alma) Atsalis of Stuart, Fla. and Tom Atsalis of McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Alison (Robert) Hendricks, Tara (Andrew) Gundersen and Brooke Atsalis; great-grandchildren, Liam and Luke Hendricks and Athina Gundersen; nephews and niece, Mick (Sandy) Ford, Melanie (Grant) Brose and Mark (Joyce) Ford; and several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of friends.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Helen Ford; nephew, Bruce Ford, and step-mother, Jean Head.
Good memories
In 1963 - 64 Mrs. Atsalis was the girls phys ed teacher at HHS. I remember walking back to school after lunch up town and she would be coming back from her lunch, driving her 1964 Impala SS--red with white convertible top. My condolences to the family.
