Marian Engle Butler, 91, a lifelong resident of Leesburg, passed away Thursday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2017 at Four Seasons of Washington in Washington Court House.
She was born Sept. 3, 1926 in Leesburg to the late Rayburn and Norah (Sexton) Engle.
Marian was always very active in the Leesburg United Methodist Church, participating in Bible studies, the United Methodist Women’s group, the church choir and the Emmaus Walk. She worked for several years at the Leesburg Citizens Bank in the early 1960s.
In later years, she was known for the many cakes she baked for others for graduations, parties, picnics, family get-togethers and for Lytle’s Restaurant. She and Ray owned and operated Lytle’s Restaurant in Leesburg in the early 1970s, and she helped him with the Country Garden Salad Dressing business. Her waitressing career spanned six decades, beginning with her first job at Turner’s Restaurant in Leesburg in 1938 serving the farming “threshers” a family-style meal. She went on to work at Cunningham’s Restaurant in high school, as well as Feller’s Drug Store. Throughout the years, she worked at Lytle’s Restaurant/Friendly Village Inn in Leesburg and at the Terrace Lounge in Washington Court House and the Wooden Spoon in Hillsboro, where she was employed when she retired at the age of 72.
She had many fond memories of her two years living in Columbus at the YWCA Residence Hall during World War II. She deeply loved Jesus and her family. She enjoyed serving others, dancing, old ’40s movies, big band music, walking, going out to eat, riding her first bicycle which she acquired at the age of 40, visiting with friends and baking dozens and dozens of cookies for the church’s Kairos prison ministry for many, many years.
She is survived by one daughter, Colleen (George) Bailey of Martinsville; one son, Craig (Marilyn) Butler of Leesburg; five grandchildren, Holly (Brad) McAlister of Tulsa, Okla., Libby (Chris) Rose of Tulsa, Okla., Spencer Bailey of SeaTac, Wash., Jessica (Dustin) Marks of Cincinnati and Travis Butler of Leesburg; eight great-grandchildren of Tulsa, Okla.; and one sister-in-law, Rosalind Dunsieth Engle of Leesburg.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Raymond Butler; one sister, Helen Jean Engle Bernard; two brothers, Charles Dudley Engle and Edwin Earl Engle; one brother-in-law, Gerald Bernard; and one sister-in-law, Ramona Davisson Engle.
Marian donated her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine’s Body Donation Program. Friends are invited to a celebration of Marian’s life at the Leesburg United Methodist Church on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017 at 6 p.m. Pastor Rich Allen will officiate. The life celebration will be followed by a time of dessert and fellowship at the church.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the many friends who visited Marian and sent cards and for the excellent care and attention from the staff that Marian received at the Highland District Hospital Emergency Room and in-hospital stay in Hillsboro, at Four Seasons of Washington in Washington Court House and from Hospice of Heartland and volunteers from Hospice of Fayette County.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, c/o the Leesburg United Methodist Church or to the Friendly Village Community Center, both in c/o the Leesburg United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 333, Leesburg, Ohio 45135.
