Leo Arden Haycook, 87, of Leesburg, passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021 at the Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe.
He was born on April 11, 1934, in Bucyrus, the son of the late Leo Haycook and Ida (Geiser) Haycook Lear.
Mr. Haycook proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, serving four years' active duty, and then continued his service eventually retiring as first sergeant from the Ohio Air National Guard 160th at Rickenbacker ANGB.
Leo graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in education and later earned his master’s degree in education from Xavier. He began his teaching career in Sinking Spring, where he also found his love of coaching basketball. He then moved to Leesburg, where he taught history and English at Fairfield Local High School and Junior High for over 15 years. While at Fairfield High School, he taught driver’s education, was junior class adviser for several years and drove a school bus. In 1985, he retired as the school guidance counselor, a position he truly loved.
Mr. Haycook attended the Hillsboro Christian Science Church, the Leesburg Masonic Lodge 78 F&AM, and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. He had a great love for teaching, reading, the Cleveland Indians and especially The Ohio State Buckeyes. Over the years, he enjoyed running into former students who always remembered his love of telling jokes.
Mr. Haycook is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sharon Haycook; a daughter, Stephanie (Brian) Ortlieb of Leesburg; two grandchildren, Tyler (Sarah) Ortlieb of Milton, Fla. and Christopher (Cassidy) Ortlieb of Xenia; three great-grandchildren, Nolan Ortlieb, Norah Ortlieb and Holden Ortlieb; niece and nephew, Vicky and Bob Bell of Bucyrus; cousin, Arlene Dudley of Mt. Gilead; and his faithful dog, Coco.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Lydia Ortlieb; two sisters, Maxine Lauthers and Wanda (Clyde) Sloop; and a niece, Diana Borders.
A celebration of Leo’s life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
