Kevin Matthew “Matt” Cockrell, 41, of Frankfort, Ky., passed away Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021.

He was born March 6, 1980 in Springfield to Debbie (Free) Davis and the late Kevin Evelsizor.

On June 12, 2021, he married his best friend, Carly L. Terrell.

Matt was an alumnus of Morehead State University, Georgetown College and Campbellsville University. He earned a Rank I Masters of Art in School Improvement and taught art at Martha Layne Collins High School, where he was also the former girls golf coach. Matt was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Kentucky and National Art Educators Associations. He received the secondary level Art Educator of the Year in 2019.

Matt touched so many students' lives and left a lasting impression on them. He enjoyed traveling and seeing the historical sights and visiting the national parks. Matt liked to play golf and camp, and he always worked to improve his art program. He also attended Buckrun Baptist Church in Frankfort, Ky. Matt was a loving teacher, husband, brother, son, uncle and friend.

In addition to his wife, Matt is survived by his mother, Debbie (Tom) Davis; father, Dave (Amy) Cockrell; sisters, Nicole Cockrell and Tara (Gabe) Weaver; brother, Sean (Mary Claire) Cockrell; stepbrother, Adam Davis; mother-in-law, Terry Terrell; father-in-law, Kevin (Brenda) Terrell; sisters-in-law, Tera (Jason) Watts and Jessica (Joe) Marks; brother-in-law, Justin (Bethany) Watkins; nieces and nephews, Isaac, Seth, Jonah, Kiya, Ainsley, Ember, Haylee, Zachary, Sydnee, Addyson, Kennedy, Hattie and Mollie; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents, Tiny and Dewey Free and Dick and Ruth Evelsizor; as well as his four-legged friends, Percy and Sully.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Bainbridge with Sean Cockrell and Troy Villars officiating. Following the service, Matt will be laid to rest in the Bainbridge Cemetery. Friends may visit with Matt’s family Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the church. Those attending the service should wear a face mask and observe social distancing.

A memorial service will be held at Martha Layne Collins High School in Shelbyville, Ky. on Oct. 2 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Martha Layne Collins High School Art Fund, 801 Discovery Blvd., Shelbyville, Ky. 40065.
