Joyce Gail (née Coleman) Harmon, 80, passed away Jan. 28, 2021 at The Laurels Nursing Center after she had bravely fought Alzheimer's, metastatic cancer and COVID-19.
Often described as a "firecracker" with fierce intelligence and quick wit, Joyce was born Jan. 2, 1941 in Wolfpit, Pike County, Ky.
After graduating from King's Daughters Nursing School (Ashland, Ky.), Joyce moved to Bryan, Ohio, with husband, Billy “Bennie” Harmon, her lifelong love. She was employed as a registered nurse at Community Hospitals of Williams County for 44 years. In addition to working full-time and raising three daughters, Joyce was an avid seamstress, quilter and spent many hours each year “putting up” vegetables from the family garden.
Remaining to cherish many memories are daughters Kimberly (Suzanne) Harmon, Kelly (Sean) Hash and Taylor (Nick) Peters; granddaughters Autumn and Makala Hash; great-granddaughters Ophelia Harmon and Sofia Cruz; step-grandchildren Neil Von Ahn and Abby Von Ahn; step-great-grandchildren Sarah and Katie Von Ahn and Rosie and Lily Maston; siblings Kenneth (Janet), Robert (Brenda), Brenda (George) Potter, Gary, Johnny (Pat) and Janie Damron; brother- and sister-in-law, Mac and Judy Coleman of Rockhouse, Ky.; nieces, nephews and cousins; many friends; and special nurse and caregiver, Missi Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Berns and Alma Coleman; husband, Bennie; and son-in-law, Sean Hash.
There will be a visitation Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. at Thacker Funeral Home in Pikeville, Ky., followed by graveside service at Annie E. Young Cemetery, Pikeville. The family thanks Thompson Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Ohio, for their assistance in preparing and transporting Joyce home to Kentucky.
