Josephine Roseann Karnes Hadley Harner passed away Aug. 7, 2022 after 100 years of loving God, her family and her friends.

Josephine was born Oct. 21, 1921 at the Karnes Orchard homestead near Greenfield. She was nicknamed “Sis” at an early age and loved when her brothers would take her with them to the barns and orchard. She graduated from Wilmington College in 1947. Josephine taught first grade at Webster Elementary School in Hillsboro for 19 years.

She attended Fall Creek Friends Church when young, while raising her children and again in her 90s. She loved camping, hiking and traveling and even rode a bicycle across the United States when she was 63. Josephine ran in 5K races and hiked part of the Appalachian Trail. For 10 years, she volunteered at Your Father’s Kitchen and was named an Outstanding Woman of Clinton County. Josephine’s home and table were always open to all her children’s friends, neighbors, siblings, ministers, missionaries, international travelers or those just needing a meal.

Those left to remember her love of life are children, David (Joan) Hadley, Roseann (Russ) Stauffer, Samuel (Michele) Hadley, Suellen (David) Roehm, Esther (Mark) Shinkle and Elizabeth (Gilly) Hadley; stepdaughter, Isabelle Donehey; stepdaughter-in-law, Jennie Harner; stepson-in-law, Mack Fife; the Fawley/Hill families; 13 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great- grandchildren.

She was met in the kingdom of Heaven by her first husband, Jesse W. Hadley, and second husband, Orville D. Harner; her parents, George and Josephine (Towne) Karnes; seven brothers and one sister; stepdaughter, Elaine Fife; and stepson, John Harner.

A memorial service will be Friday, Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Springfield Friends Meeting, 121 Todd’s Fork Road, Wilmington, Ohio 45177 with burial to follow in the Springfield Friends Cemetery. H. Scott Latimer will officiate.
