Musician 1st Class Joseph Warren Hoffman, born Sept. 3, 1917 in Lyndon, Ohio and raised in Chillicothe, and who gave his life aboard the USS Oklahoma during the attack of Dec. 7, 1941, will have his remains buried in the Greenfield Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 20.
Seaman Hoffman was a member of the U.S. Navy's Special Branch, from which musicians performed at ceremonies, while marching in military formation, and in band or orchestra sets for entertainment for civilian and military personnel.
Following training at the U.S. Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Ill., he was promoted to seaman second class on May 10, 1938, musician second class on Nov. 16, 1938 and musician first class on Feb. 16, 1941.
His awards and decorations include: Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal (with Fleet Clasp), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with Bronze Star), American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
