John Williamson Jr., 95, of Wilmington, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021 at Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born May 24, 1926 in Pike County, son of John and Florence Helen (Smart) Williamson Sr.
On June 25, 1946, he married Marie (Hoffer) Williamson at the home of her parents in New Burlington. They celebrated 75 years together living in Clinton County.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He retired from Bush Auto Group after 60 years with the same organization — originally, Brandenburgs with Bill McCoy in the early 1950s, then Jim Cook, and retiring from Bush Chevrolet & Buick dealership. He was well respected for his workmanship and made many lifelong friends.
After retiring, his favorite thing to do was spend time in the outdoors enjoying God's creation. He loved his family, his church (First Church of God, A Street, Wilmington), where he served on the board for several years, and he liked being an usher. He was a quiet man who did not seek the limelight.
In addition to his wife, other surviving family are his son, Kenny (Marilyn) Williamson of Clarksville; two grandchildren, Tracy (Shawn) Hughes and Ryan (Connie) Williamson; six great-grandchildren, Alexandria Hughes, Aaron Hughes, Evan Williamson, Ava Williamson, Haley Williamson and Gavin Williamson; sister, Irma Peyton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by daughter, Joyce Williamson Conley, who passed away in 1968; and four brothers, Eugene, William, Cecil and Earl Williamson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home 97 W. Locust St. at North Mulberry Street, Wilmington, with Pastor Andy Christiansen officiating. Interment will follow in the Springfield Friends Cemetery, Wilmington. Friends will be received Wednesday from noon until 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Masks and social distancing are politely requested.
