John A. Warkala, 89, of Hillsboro, passed away early Thursday morning, Nov. 8, 2018 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown.
He was born Dec. 11, 1929 in Dayton, the son of the late John and Ursula Varkala of Vilnius, Lithuania.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hillsboro. He was a devoted father and loved fishing and spending endless hours on the Ohio River with all his children. He had worked as a television repairman and handyman most of his life. Those who knew him called him “Mr. Fix-It.” He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War.
He is survived by three children, Lisa (Billy) Steen and John Warkala, both of Texas, and Marie Helton of Ohio; six grandchildren, Tiffany Gobble of Oklahoma, Lindsey (Wade) Rhodes, Julia (David) Minter and Coeyn Warkala, all of Texas, and Kody Helton and Kaitlyn Helton, both of Ohio; eight great-grandchildren, Madilyn and Ashlen McNiel, Conner and Tripp Rhodes, Evan and Eli Minter, Knox Helton and baby Moore; and three godchildren, James Fiedler, Renee (Steve) Stefan and John “Tony” (Sheila) Fiedler.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Warkala and Albert Warkala; and two sisters, Nellie Pamos and Frances Warkala.
In keeping with his wishes, he was cremated. A graveside service with military honors is planned for the spring at the Calvary Cemetery in Dayton. The Turner & Son Funeral Home and Crematory in Hillsboro is serving the family.
