John Steven Otey, 71, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 7, 2022 at the Highland District Hospital.
John was born May 29, 1950 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of the late Thomas Roscoe and Eloise (Matheney) Otey.
John worked in retail most of his life and owned and operated the Rice Mill Gift Shop on St. Simons Island, Ga. for several years. He helped open and manage the family dollar store in Hillsboro after moving to Ohio in 1993. After 10 years, he saw the need to take care of his ailing mother, so he retired from retail.
He met many people in his public life, was very friendly and never met an enemy. He was full of life and ambition and shared this spirit with everyone. He will always be remembered in that way.
John is survived by his partner of over 30 years, Ron Frost; two sisters, Judith Chafin of Florida and Linda (Ted) Graf of Colorado; a brother, Thomas Otey of Colorado; many nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as extended family Tara and Clayton Bartley and family, Tim Frost, Autum and Colten Medley, Maxine Frost, Barbara and Charles Creed and family, Darryl Frost and family, Penny and Tim McGinnis and family and many other friends. A special thanks goes out to the staff of Hospice of Hope, who cared for his mother; the Cancer Care Center at Highland District Hospital; and to all the excellent doctors and nurses that cared for John.
In keeping with his wishes, all services will be private at the convenience of the family, as will his burial. The Turner & Son Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
