Note: The following tribute was written in memory of John Kenneth Kelley, who passed away Aug. 18, 1930 and is buried in the Fairfax Cemetery in Highland County.
We can hardly realize today that the vibrations of the heart of one so young in life, which only a few days ago were in full sympathy and accord with friends and loved ones have ceased. Those lips which uttered words of joy and peace are sealed and hands that rendered loyal service to his loved ones are stilled because it has seemed best to the one who doeth all things well to say, "Thy works on earth is done, come home."
Such was the summons that came to John Kenneth Kelley on Aug. 18, 1930 at the Highland County Hospital. He was born Sept. 15, 1911 and departed this life at the early age of 18 years, 11 months and three days.
Kenneth was the only son of C.E. and Gettie Kelley, having one sister Opal, who will miss his good advice and brotherly love. He was a clear, straightforward young man and possessed nothing but good habits so in the passing of this good boy of the community is losing a noble character.
He graduated from Belfast High School with the class of 1930. He was always ready and willing to help in any school activity and was never heard to speak harm of others. How strange that one so young and promising should be taken from us; yet, we cannot understand for death comes to all alike. To know and associate with him was a blessing not to be forgotten. His personality was very lovely, characterized by a rare sweetness and thoughtfulness for others.
He was kind and obedient to parents. He enjoyed close friendships because he knew how to be a friend, a friend of everyone and enemy of none. Kenneth has gone and to his friends and neighbors left behind the sun will shine less brightly because we no longer have the radiance of his smile. The house will be sad and lonely without him, but God knows best. His will must be done.
During his last days, his suffering was intense, yet he bore it patiently. Not only will he be missed by his loved ones, but by his numerous friends his school mates, his teachers and by everyone who knew him. They are to mourn a kind and loving father, mother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, and a number of aunts and uncles, and a host of other relatives and friends.
“Grant us the power of quickening grace to fit our souls to fly. Then, where we drop this dying flesh, We will rise above the sky.” – The Christian Psalmist.
