John Jacob VanGundy, 72, of Bainbridge passed away Friday, Dec. 25, 2015 at Adena Medical Center in Greenfield.

He was born Jan. 6, 1943 in Ross County, the son of the late Willis and Eudora Cooper VanGundy.

On June 14, 1963, he married the former Darlene J. Hunt, who survives.

He is also survived by his children, Crystal (Darryn) Samsel of Florida and Mark VanGundy of Bainbridge; grandchildren, Justin (Heather) VanGundy, Megan Varney, Hannah Thompson, Jordy VanGundy, Tia (Carlos) Porter, Cody (Ashley) VanGundy, Christopher George, Wyatt and Sophia VanGundy; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Rumfield and Ann Eiring; brother, Rodney (Debbie) VanGundy; sister-in-law, Jackie VanGundy; several nieces and nephews including, Dustina Davis, Melissa, Christy and Ashley Henderson, Amber Mathews; 11 great-nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.

John was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Sayward VanGundy; sisters, Opal Maughmer, Leila Henderson and Mary Jarrells; and brothers, Willis Earl, George “Bud” and Roger VanGundy.

John retired from the Mead Corporation after 40 years of service. He loved spending time with his family, hunting mushrooms and ginseng. He was also an avid sports fan, who loved to follow the Paint Valley Bearcats.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30 at the Good Hope Community Church. Burial will follow in the Good Hope Cemetery.

Friends may visit with John’s family from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith-Moore-Ebright Funeral Home, Bainbridge.
