John Albert Steritz, 85, the son of Howard and Lucille Steritz, was born May 13, 1936 at home on the family farm near Lynchburg and passed away Nov. 6, 2021 in the home where he was born.
John lived and worked on the family farm his entire life and was a member of the Ohio Seed Improvement Association since 1956. He raised and sold Ohio Certified soybean and wheat seed to local farms for over 60 years.
John graduated from Lynchburg High School in 1954. He attended Ohio State University after graduation and was a member of the OSU marching band. He had a lifelong love of music and played the trombone in his high school band and was a member of the National FFA Band and Chorus at the FFA National Convention at Kansas City, Mo. in 1953. He was a drummer in a local dance band and a member of the Hillsboro Barber Shop Chorus and was also a member of a barbershop quartet that performed all over southern Ohio for many years.
John enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served from 1957 to 1960. He was a 60-year member of the Scottish Rite of the Freemasonry. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was branch president for several years. He was a model train hobbyist and enjoyed taking steam train excursions.
He married Lucy Anne Hubbell Dec. 27, 1964 and was happily married until her passing in 2016.
He is survived by Karen Howard Malott (daughter), Donald Lee Howard (son), Larry Allen Howard (Jennifer) (son), Deborah Howard (daughter); grandchildren, Tony Howard (Holly), Travis Howard, John Blagg (Natasha), Ahira Hertlein (John); and Megan Priore; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Steritz; parents, Howard and Lucille Steritz; brothers, David and Robert Steritz; daughter, Margaret Davidson; granddaughter, Michelle Crockett; and grandsons, David Christopher Bundy and Aaron Blagg.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lynchburg Fire House located on SR 135 in Lynchburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boys Town, P.O. Box 8000, Boys Town, Neb. 68010; Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington D.C. 20090 or SPCA c/o Donor Relations, 11900 Conrey Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45249.
