Howard C. Spencer Sr.

Howard C. Spencer, Sr., 62, of Hillsboro, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024 at his home.

He was born on March 17, 1962, in Youngstown, the son of the late Charles T. Spencer and Jeanne (Charlebois) Spencer.

Howard was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Youngtown, and he went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Youngstown State University in 1994. Howard was a devout Catholic and family man. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Dayton, where he had sung in the choir, was one of the founding members who helped start the Boy Scouts at the church, and for the past eight years, coordinated the scheduling of altar servers for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Howard's faith was a guiding force in his life. His devotion was expressed not only through his church attendance but also in the love and care he showed towards his family. He was a loyal fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, as well as the Boston Red Sox, often spending his weekends cheering on his favorite teams. When he wasn't occupied with the exciting world of sports, Howard devoted his time to an array of recreational activities. He was a true craftsman, often seen meticulously constructing model trains that displayed his attention to detail and patience. Additionally, he demonstrated his creative side with his homemade wine. However, perhaps his most cherished pastimes were gardening and spending time with his family. Howard's passing leaves a void that will not be easy to fill. However, his spirit lives on in laughter at family gatherings, in the quiet rustle of the garden, and in the heartening cheer for his favorite teams. As we remember Howard, we will strive to emulate his prompt nature, his passion, and his unwavering love for his family and faith.

Howard is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rosemarie Spencer, whom he married on Jan. 26, 1985; six children, Amelia Spencer, Kaitlyn Spencer, Howard Spencer Jr., Cecilia Spencer, Sean Spencer and Aidan Spencer all of Hillsboro; two grandchildren, Daniel and Sophia; three sisters, Rita Spencer of Maryland, Jeanne Pierce of Columbus, Marieileen (Don) Calpin of Columbus and many friends.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Latin Requiem Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Dayton, 140 S. Findlay St., Dayton, Ohio 45403. Father George Gabet will be the Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Dayton.
