Helen Jean Pommert, 90, of Washington Court House, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021, at Carriage Court Assisted Living in Washington Court House.
She was born Jan. 25, 1931 in Greenfield, the daughter of Curliss and Jessie (McCord) Hope.
She was a 1949 graduate of McClain High School in Greenfield and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio State University in 1953.
She enjoyed her career as a first-grade teacher at Columbus Elementary Schools and at Eastside Elementary in Washington Court House. Teaching was her passion, and many of her former students told her how they loved having her as a teacher.
She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school; Phi Beta Psi Sorority; and Mothers’ Circle.
Family was everything to her, and she cherished every family gathering. She loved singing, dancing, playing the piano, going to Broadway theatre shows and socializing with family and friends. One of her greatest accomplishments was writing an autobiography that included family history and many pictures that were enjoyed by many.
She will be missed by her surviving family: one son, Steve Pommert of Reston, Va.; one daughter, Susan (Pommert) Cupp of Crestwood, Ky.; two grandsons, Christopher (Katharine) Cupp of Shelbyville, Ky. and Phillip (Rachel) Cupp of Eminence, Ky.; two great-granddaughters, Addie and Emma Cupp; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Edward Hope and her husband Dr. George H. Pommert, whom she married on August 16, 1953 and who passed away on April 4, 2013.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of her family.
