Harold Maynard Walker, 93, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 24, 2021 at the Bell Gardens Place in Hillsboro.
He was born Nov. 29, 1928 in Highland County, the son of the late Fred and Elva Jane (Nace) Walker.
Harold married Helen Caplinger in May 1954, and she preceded him in death on March 7, 2006.
He was raised on his parents’ farm and lived his life in Highland County except while serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Whiteoak High School in Mowrystown, and he also earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Wilmington College. He was known as “Smoke” to his friends, and he was a long-time employee at the Highland County Health Department and Highland Ford. He practically knew everyone in the county and was active in many organizations, notably the Area Agency On Aging.
Harold is survived by two daughters, Crystal Lynn (Patrick) Sutton and Alisa Diane Walker; one grandson, Aron Sutton; a brother, Joseph (Janet) Walker; a sister, Marilyn (Keith) Pattison; two sisters-in-law, Sharma Caplinger Nartker and Henrietta Walker; 10 nieces, Nola, Glenna, Joyce, Nancy, Jennifer, Lori, Julie, Tracey, Stephanie and Stacey; two nephews, Kelley and Jeff; and numerous friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Caplinger Walker; and two brothers, John “JL” (Joanne) Walker and Hugh Walker.
Celebration of Harold’s life and burial in the Fairfax Cemetery will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. The Turner & Son Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
