Harold Dean Brown

Harold Dean Brown, 83, of Hillsboro died Saturday, March 5, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 22, 1932 in Old Fort, N.C., the son of the late Columbus Dewey and Helen Naomi Turner Brown.

Mr. Brown was a retired carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he was the recipient of the Korean service medals, including two Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and The National Defense Service medal awards. He was an avid coonhunter, fisherman and all-around sportsman; loving father, husband, and grandpa. He loved bluegrass gospel and sang tenor with John Burke and the Layman trio for many years. First and foremost, he loved the Lord and lived a great Christian life. He was a faithful member of the Samantha Freewill Baptist Church for 31 years and was presently a member of the Southside Praise and Worship Center.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Hall Brown, whom he had married on Dec. 16, 1951; one son, Mike (Dee) Brown of Hillsboro; three daughters, Loraine (Bill) Crank of Mansfield, Leona (Mike) Anders and Angie Brown of Hillsboro; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille (Doyle) Parker; and one brother, Dan Brown of Old Fort, N.C.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Teague Brown; two sisters, Stella and Anita Brown; and one brother, Cecil Brown.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 9 at the Southside Praise and Worship Center, 621 South East Street, Hillsboro. Pastor Dr. Michael Brown and son-in-law Dr. Bill Crank will officiate.

Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will follow in the Resthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Southside Praise and Worship Center.
