Gale Marie Dukes, 77, of Hillsboro died unexpectedly but peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 in Naples, Fla.

She was born June 27, 1938 in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of the late, Harold and Erma Thompson Horton.

Mrs. Dukes attended Grinnell College, where she met her husband of 57 years, Dr. Lawrence N. Dukes.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Michael (Jody) Dukes of Nashville, Tenn., JD (Sue) Dukes of Fairborn and Tom (Tamara) Dukes of Lafayette, Ind.; one daughter, Allison (Keith) Still of Grand Rapids, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Adam, Casey, Molly, Henry, Ethan, Jacob, Grayson, Ryland and Amala; and one sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Jerry) Walker of Hillsboro.

Gale was a vibrant and active participant in her community and in her husband’s career as a college president. While she was raising her children, she found time to chair the hospital foundation, was president of the PTO, taught Sunday school, tutored Laotian children and hosted countless events at the colleges where Larry served as president, including Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, Minn. and Southern State Community College in Hillsboro. From 1984-1994, Gale owned an interior design business, sharing her gift of creativity and style which she had developed over years of renovating and decorating homes.

Larry and Gale moved to Hillsboro in 1995. She was a member of Hillsboro First United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of PEO and belonged to several other clubs including the Esoteric Club, Town Club, and Women’s Club. Her life’s mission was to create a loving and warm home for her husband and children, and all who knew her can attest that this goal was accomplished beautifully.

Funeral services will be 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church. Dr. Derek Russell will officiate. Friends may call on Saturday from 3-5 p.m. at the Church. A fellowship dinner will follow at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church, 133 East Walnut Street, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133 or to the Southern State Community College Foundation, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133.
