Dr. Shane Clay Shope, 54, of Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2021 at the Bethesda North Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born May 23, 1967 in Portsmouth, the son of Sharon (Stebel) Cassidy and James “Jim” Shope.
Dr. Shane grew up as a member of the United Methodist Church. After high school, Shane went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University, his master’s degree from the University of Miami – Oxford, Ohio and his doctorate from Ohio University – Athens, Ohio. He was employed for 22 years at the Lynchburg-Clay High School, where he started off as a teacher, then taking the job as principal and finally earning the position as superintendent, before moving on to become a college professor.
Dr. Shane enjoyed spending time with his family and loved being with his children in all the activities they participated in. He enjoyed golfing with his son, grilling, cooking, entertaining and cheering on the OSU Buckeyes. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Dr. Shane is survived by his four children, Emily Kathleen Shope, Grace Elizabeth Shope, Logan David Henry Shope and Avery Dawn Shope, all of Hillsboro; his fiancé, Meghan Griffith of Hillsboro, and her two children, Tylar Corinne Griffith and Camden Joshua Griffith, both of Hillsboro; his mother, Sharon Cassidy of Portsmouth; his father, Jim (Lois) Shope of Wheelersburg; a brother, Brandon (Teresa) Shope of Portsmouth; a nephew, Josh Shope; a niece, Brooke Shope; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Jewell Greeson and Joseph Stebel; paternal grandparents, Kathleen Maier, William Henry “Hank” Maier and Milton Shope; and his mother’s husband, Daniel Cassidy.
The Shope family will require everyone to wear a face covering while indoors during visitation and funeral service. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. following visitation Friday, Nov. 19 at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. Burial will follow services in the Prospect Cemetery.
