Doris R. Hackney, 89, of Hillsboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2018 at Heartland of Hillsboro.
She was born Dec. 5, 1928, in Greenfield, the daughter of the late James D. and Nellie Ross.
She was a 1947 graduate of McClain High School in Greenfield. She worked as a telephone operator and also at the Highland Enterprise Lumber Co. in Hillsboro. Later in life, she established herself as a successful real estate agent. She was active in the Eastern Star, White Shrine, Red Hat Club, and the First United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with her family and was affectionately called "Nanny.”
She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings, Harry Ross, Ella Mae Karnes, Paul Ross, John Ross and James Ross. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Hackney.
She is survived by three daughters, Connie (Richard) Sylvester of Charlottesville, Va., Linda (Steve) Morgan of Blue Springs, Mo. and Tammy (Rob) Adams, of Lancaster; 12 grandchildren, Aaron Sylvester, Caleb Sylvester (Donna Canady), Hannah (Chris) Steele (children, Elizabeth, Katherine, Emily), Abigail (Matt Schuneman) Sylvester (daughter, Louise), Susanna (Matthew) Walker (son, Oscar), Adam (Ashley) Sylvester (children, Jackson, Lorelei), Sarah Cicutti (children, Jonah, Wesley), Daniel Morgan, Joshua Morgan, Brian (Letanya) Stewart (children, Salem, Sidney, Lincoln), Tyler (Amanda) Stewart (children, Morrison, Hezekiah), Megan (Johnny) Ropple (children, Eisley, Norah); two step-grandchildren, Josh and Macy Adams; multiple nieces and nephews; and of course, Vern Williams of Hillsboro, her love and faithful companion.
A celebration of life service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 at the First United Methodist Church of Hillsboro. Friends may greet the family at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at the Stringtown Cemetery on the homestead property where she grew up. The Turner & Son Funeral Home is serving the family.
