David M. Higham, 93, of Lynchburg, formerly of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Friday, March 11, 2022 at his home.
He was born Jan. 5, 1929, in Morgantown, W.Va., the son of the late Walter and Louella (Lantz) Higham.
David retired as a firefighter/EMT from Hillsboro Fire Department after 25 years of service and was the owner/operator of Dave’s Lock Shop for many years, where he serviced many local businesses as well as residential customers in Highland and surrounding counties. David spent 20 years of his retirement driving a school bus for Hillsboro City Schools. As a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War, he was a member of F.O.E. Aerie #1161 and VFW Post 9094, where he was a part of the Highland County Honor Guard.
David enjoyed spending time with his family, and “front porch sitting” was a favorite pastime. He spent many years as a permanent camper at Cave Lake Campground, where he enjoyed playing euchre and listening to the Reds game on the radio. David touched many lives in his 93 years and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his only daughter, Lora (Bill) Kelly of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Matt (Abby) Kelly of Leesburg, Logan (Haley) Kelly of Hillsboro, Mitch (Casey) Kelly of Lynchburg and Morgan (Trey) Whiting of Hillsboro; great-grandchildren, Luke, Lydia, Annalyse, Drew, Madi, Emilee and Mason Kelly; one niece, Patty Little of Vienna, W.Va.; one nephew, Danny (Bonnie) Higham of Sun City, Ariz.; and numerous friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Higham; second wife, Rose Higham; one grandson, Brian Kelly; and one brother, Fred Higham.
Family will receive friends Thursday, March 17, 2022 from 4-7 p.m., and the funeral service will be Friday, March 18, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Good News Gathering Church in Hillsboro with Jim Bush and Brian Vance officiating. Burial will follow with a fire truck escort to the Hillsboro Cemetery with a firefighter honor ceremony and military rites to be accorded by the Highland County Honor Guard. There will be a celebratory luncheon immediately following graveside services at the Lynchburg Fire House on state Route 135.
