David “Dave” E. Lowell, 70, of Hillsboro, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 17, 2017 at the Ohio State James Cancer Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born April 10, 1947 in Columbus, the son of the late Russell and Helen (Diven) Lowell.
Dave retired after 33 years from the Hillsboro Fire Department, and he served as the Assistant Fire Chief for most of that time. He was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ (lifelong), Hillsboro Lions Club and Hillsboro Planning Commission.
Dave was a volunteer for NOVA and the Ohio Crisis Response Team where he assisted with the New Jersey Victim Assistance Center after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack. He also went to New Orleans to help after Hurricane Katrina and assisted in many other disasters.
He was a Scout Master (in Scouting over 25 years) and taught fire safety classes in Hillsboro City Schools (28 years). In recent years he was a member of the Fraternity of International Real Bearded Santas and had been the Santa for Redsfest and the Cincinnati Museum Center, known by many as the best Santa ever. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping and loved spending time with his family and friends.
Dave is survived by his wife of 40 years, Theresa Lowell, whom he married Sept. 3, 1977 at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. He is also survived by two children, Angie (Bryan) Eichelberger of Jeromesville and Steven (Brittni) Lowell; four grandchildren, Warren, Evan, Jaelyn and Tucker; one brother, Bob (Lynn) Lowell of Hillsboro; two nephews, Geoff (Ginger) Lowell of Hillsboro and Justin Shaw of Florida; four nieces, Jenny Lowell of Kettering, Katie (Eric) Aurigema of Alabama, Ciara (Shawn) Martz of Florida and Deborah (Andrew) DeJarnett of Kentucky; two sisters-in-law, Donna Hodges of Kentucky and Lesa Shaw of Florida; lifelong friends Jane Tucker (JP) Radley, Sue Morris (Bill) Risenberger and Patsy Fauber; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Lincoln and Jeremiah Eichelberger; a sister, Kathleen Lowell; and a nephew, Bryan Hodges.
Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017 at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017 at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. Jim Bush will be officiating. Burial will follow funeral services in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hillsboro Church of Christ, 155 W. Walnut St. Hillsboro, Ohio 45133, to offset medical expenses.
